MEET THE WINEMAKER
Jean Hoefliger
Consulting Winemaker
As a young man, Jean Hoefliger studied international finance in his home country of Switzerland, eventually finding his passion in wine production, working at wineries in Bordeaux, South Africa, Spain, Italy, and California. With his educational and vocational training, Jean offers a unique perspective, bringing the insight of viticultural expertise, winemaking knowledge, and real-world business acumen. At his godfather’s estate in Switzerland, he developed a love for the alchemical process of turning grapes into something extraordinary. After moving to California, Jean worked at Michel Schlumberger and Hartford Family in Sonoma, eventually exploring the world and making wine in Bordeaux at Chateau Cardonnieux, South Africa at Meerlust while earning his degrees in enology and viticulture at Switzerland’s Federal Winemaking School of Changins and in science at the Maturité Fédérale. After several years in Bordeaux following his education at Chateau Lynch- Bages, Jean was called back to California where he spent five years as winemaker for Newton Vineyards.
Starting in 2006, Jean was an institutional partner and winemaker of Alpha Omega in Napa Valley. He helped grow the winery while concreting himself as a respected consulting winemaker on a global level. In early 2021, he decided to wrap up his winemaking role at Alpha Omega and focus on his consulting clients. Jean has built his client wineries over the years to include: Monteverro in Tuscany, Grapeheart in Suisun Valley, V. Vineyards in Sonoma County, and in Napa Valley: AXR, The Debate, Clark-Claudon, Decades 5, Denali Estate, Harbison Estate Wines, Joseph Carr Wines, MR Michel Rolland, Theorize, and Sunshine Valley Vineyards. Jean’s consulting business reflects his passion for vineyard management, winemaking, and advisement on relevant business strategies that focus on implementation of sales structure.
